EHRI-BE brings together experts on Holocaust research, archival sources and digital and AI tools from universities, research centers, museums, educational institutions, archives and libraries.

EHRI-BE has nine partners, and its activities are coordinated by Kazerne Dossin and the State Archives of Belgium/CegeSoma.

Coordinators

The State Archives of Belgium and the Study and Documentation Centre for War and Contemporary Society (SAB-CEGESOMA)

The State Archives of Belgium (SAB) is a federal scientific institution that is part of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO). The State Archives’ role is to ensure the proper preservation of archival documents produced and managed by the state authorities and it has 20 repositories spread throughout the country, including the Study and Documentation Centre for War and Contemporary Society (CEGESOMA). Located in Brussels, this centre examines the wars and conflicts of the 20th century and their impact on Belgium. CEGESOMA collects archives and documentation, conducts research and organises academic and public events. Along with the other repositories that make up the State Archives, it holds key archival collections for the study of the Holocaust and it has been involved in developing (digital) finding aids, inventories and other tools to ensure that these collections are accessible.

SAB-CEGESOMA has been a partner institution of EHRI since its very first project in 2010 and it has played an integral role in the development of this international research infrastructure, making significant contributions to EHRI’s project-based activities and its establishment as a permanent European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). Together with Kazerne Dossin, SAB-CEGESOMA coordinates the activities of EHRI-BE.

Jewish Museum of Belgium

The Jewish Museum of Belgium is a publicly recognised private institution. The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, study and promote – through exhibitions, publications and events, items and documents from collections that reflect the diversity of life – traditions and the history of Jewish communities in Belgium over time, but primarily since the 18th century. With over 16,000 items – including Judaica, artworks, rare books, textiles, posters, and everyday objects – the museum is home to a rich and varied collection. It also houses a library of 13,500 general and reference books, 4,500 Yiddish language books, a photo library with 6,500 entries and an archive department.

The archive department manages nearly 300 linear meters of documents, dating from the 19th century to the present day. These archives include private family collections; records from Jewish cultural, political and social associations; and documents related to the museum itself. A key resource is the “Register of Jews,” entrusted to the museum by the Jewish Social Service. It contains 45,000 records which were digitised by Kazerne Dossin and can be accessed via a searchable database that covers 56,000 registrations, making it an essential tool for Holocaust research.

The museum has been involved in the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI) since 2015 and joined the EHRI-BE consortium in 2024.
